Juraj Barabas

Luminescence is international sales, production and finance outfit, managed by the industry veteran Juraj Barabas. Over the past years, Luminescence has co-produced, co-financed and sold over 23 animated feature films, and 17 live-action feature films from all around the world.

Luminescence’s titles are regularly reaching top box office results on the independent market. Each year Luminescence oversees over 100 individual theatrical releases across the world, entertaining millions of spectators with our high-quality entertainment. Since 2017, Luminescence titles has grossed over $90M USD worldwide.

Luminescence is a full service company for the producers, and distributors from all around the world. Our goal is to deliver the best possible experience through our services. With our great sales team, legal team, delivery team, marketing team, accounting team, finance team, we believe that we have achieved this aim.

The company has a handcrafted approach to each film, with the goal of selling out the world on each title, and is attending annually the major markets as EFM (Berlin), Filmart (Hong Kong), Marche Du Film (Cannes), SIFF (Shanghai), TIFF (Toronto), AFM (Los Angeles) and ATF (Singapore).

Juraj Barabas currently holds the position of Managing Director and co-owner of international sales, production and finance outfit Luminescence Kft.

During his tenure he secured the financing and worldwide theatrical distribution for high profile animated titles such as "Gracie and Pedro: Pet's to the Rescue!", "Cats in the Museum", "The Big Trip franchise", "Dolphin Boy franchise", "Nutcracker and the Magic Flute", or "The Myth of Maracuda". Luminescence has also partnered with Spanish powerhouse Dea Planeta on the branded animated feature film "SuperBernard", which is based on beloved animated TV series. Barabas is also serving as the executive producer on the pictures “Salvable” starring Shia LaBeouf and "Bobby Fox in the Lower Dimension” starring Ben Foster, Christina Hendricks, and Sophia Lillis.

Barabas moved to Lumi from animation studio Licensing Brands, where he was in the position of president of international distribution. Prior LB, Barabas run Los Angeles based sales outfit Recreation Media, where he held the position of Managing Director and Head of Sales. In that capacity he was responsible for worldwide sales and day to day operations. Over the years he has licensed rights to distributors and broadcasters around the world on a wide slate of film and television titles with talent as James Franco, Abigail Breslin, Martin Sheen, Andy Garcia, Jean Clade Van Damme, Stephen Dorff, Val Kilmer or Terrence Malick.

As part of his tenure at Recreation, Barabas has also handled sales on a number of prestige libraries: Voltage Pictures catalog that includes award winning titles such as “The Hurt Locker,” “Charlie Countryman” and “The Company You Keep”; and the Liberation Entertainment catalog that includes such beloved TV classics as “Dany Boone” and “The Rifleman.”

Barabas also consulted for German production company Constantin Entertainment and helped set up the local office in Slovakia where he facilitated the start of production on “Master Chef Slovakia.”

Between 2014 and 2016 Barabas consulted for ZenithOptimedia for the territories of EE and CIS on content deals and introduced to the group the top independent distributors in the region, as well as studios.

Barabas studied at Paneuropean University in Bratislava, Charles University in Prague and at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He has lived in Bratislava, Zurich, Prague and Los Angeles.

In 2019 he was recognized by Forbes Slovakia as one of 30 most talented under 30.
